Killer Waves: Get the Facts
Most student do not understand physics because they failed to appreciate & apply what they 've learned. In fact if u can appreciate the physics behind God's creation as well as man made innovation, then u'll find physics very interesting.
The problem with some students, they find physics as a borring subject because they limit themselves by only reading textbook, teachers' note or SPM's reference book.
How can i learn physics in interesting way??
The answer is simple...if u do extra research, u'll discover plenty of interesting facts about physics.
Ok lets start with the first chapter of form 5 , i.e wave. One of the inersting facts about water wave is the creation of killer waves known as TSUNAMI. I believed that most of us can still recall event of tsunami that happened in Penang, Phuket ,Acheh and some of the regions of Asia in December 2004. It was a shocking tragedy that killed more than 100 000 lives and left others injured, homeless and struggling to survive.
Here are some of the facts that u may want to know about TSUNAMI:
1.What causes a tsunami?
In SPM we learned that wave can be produced through series of disturbance or vibration. The same basic concept applied with creation of Tsunami.When an undersea earthquake or other major disturbance causes a section of the ocean floor to suddenly rise or sink, the mass of water above the affected area also rises or sinks. This unexpected movement of the water creates a series of powerful waves.

Salam Maulidurrasul
Tatkala sibuk membantu pelajar ulangkaji untuk ujian intervensi, cuti Maulidurrasul umpama rahmat besar kepada para pelajar di sekitar wilayah. Masa yang ada dimanfaatkan sepenuhnya untuk membuat persiapan ala 'last minute'..
Hmm..sesungguhnya sambutan Maulidurrasul itu sebenarnya mengingatkan diri ini tentang hakikat 'masa' yang bersesuaian dgn hadith baginda:
"Manfaatkanlah lima kesempatan sebelum datang kesempitan. Manfaatkan usia mudamu sebelum kamu tua, manfaatkan sehatmu sebelum sakit, gunakan kekayaanmu sebelum kamu miskin, gunakan waktu lapangmu sebelum kamu sibuk dan manfaatkan hidupmu sebelum kamu mati." (HR al-Hakim)
Sesungguhnya baginda Rasullullah(SAW) adalah manusia yang sangat bijaksana. Di antara ciri-ciri orang yang bijaksana adalah orang yang tahu mengurus & menghargai masa.
Maka sempena bulan maulid ini, marilah kita jadikan baginda sebagai ikutan dan idola. Mudah-mudahan kita tergolong di kalangan mereka yang cerdik dan bijaksana.

Facts about WAVES
- Waves transfer energy without transfering the matter.
- Transverse wave's particles vibrate perpendicular to the wave direction.
- Longitudinal wave's particles vibrate parallel to the wave direction.
- The amplitude of a wave determines its energy. Higher amplitude has greater energy.
- Damping of wave causes decrease in amplitude & energy.
- Waves' wavefront is always pependicular to the direction of the waves.
- Waves undergo all of these phenomena; reflection, refraction, diffraction & interference.
- Water,light & electromagnetic waves are transverse waves.
- Coherent waves have same frequency & in phase.
- As the frequency of a wave increases its energy increases and its wavelength decreases.
- Shorter waves with higher frequencies have shorter periods.
- Light is a transverse wave
- Light slows down, bends toward the normal and has a shorter wavelength when it enters a higher refractive index(n).
- Medium with higher refractive index has higher optical density.
- At the critical angle a light wave will be refracted to 90 degrees.
- Blue light has more energy,a shorter wavelength and a higher frequency than red light (remember- ROYGBIV).
- Monochromatic light has one color, frequency & wavelength.
- Water waves moves faster at deeper region. This change in speed causes refraction of water waves.
- Water waves has longer wavelength at deeper region.
- Deeper region is less dense than shallow region.
- Water waves bended towards normal as it moves from deeper to shallow region.
- After diffraction, water waves amplitude decrease thus its energy decrease as well.However its speed, wavelength & frequency remain constant.
- Sound is a longitudinal waves.
- Sound wave is produced through vibration of an object, like guitar string.
- Vibration frm the object causes air molecules to be pushed & pulled forming a COMPRESSION & RAREFACTION region.
- Series of COMPRESSIOn & RAREFACTION produce sound.
- Louder sound has bigger amplitude.
- Sound with high pitch has higher frequency.
- The sound that we hear is known as 'audio sound' that has freuency between 20-20khz.
- Those sound below 20hz is known as infrasound. While sound with frequency beyond 20khz is known as ultrasonic.
- Sound require medium to travel. It travels fastest in solid> liquid> gas.
- Sound can't be heard in vacuum....Starwars' outer space sound effect was a myth :)
